Well i did and i got so much self confidence from that class that now i am always handed the Mike to speak and just off the cuff no practice and i do it and i think it is easy but i know basically what i am speaking about and i have the confidence now. so my answer is knowing the subject... A very primitive instinct. Being the center of attention, the way you are when you give a report or speak in front of a large group, could trigger an instinct needed from way back from when being the center of attention meant being prey. Some of us get the instinct to "fight", i.e, give it all you got and dazzle the audience, ace the presentation, and some of us prefer the "flight" approach- you just basically want to run. Google fight or flight and you'll probably get all kinds of interesting stuff, probably some related to public speaking...good luck! Its the fight or flight response. A very primitive instinct. Fear of public speaking is a very common fear...that is easily overcome....just by speaking in front of an audience. There is lots of info on the internet , google it....I make my students speak in front of the class within the first two weeks of school. Their fear ends, immediately......(college psych prof) Sometimes other disorders, e.g. social anxiety disorder, asperger’s yes…and sometimes just plain shyness.
