How can I overcome my public speaking problem?

I am a outgoing person in my class and know everyone. I am not insecure or self conscious and talk to friends all the time with out any problem. However, when I get in front of the class, I lose my breath and have to talk in short phrases and make a very obvious and unnecessary gasp for air between lines. I really need help. I do not think I am from nervous of public speaking, but because of my lack of breath I have become nervous of messing up. Please help.
